Wind farm developer, Broadview Energy, is to submit a new planning application to Allerdale Council for its proposed wind farm at Westnewton, near Aspatria in Cumbria. Earlier in the year Broadview had appealed to the Planning Inspectorate for non determination of its original application. It did so in order to allow its application to be heard in conjunction with that for the neighbouring Brownrigg Hall project, which was at that time under appeal. The Brownrigg appeal was subsequently withdrawn. After discussion with Allerdale Borough Council it has been decided to withdraw the appeal for Westnewton and re-submit the application, allowing it to be determined by the Council.

Jeffrey Corrigan, Managing Director of Broadview Energy, said: “We always felt it was proper for Allerdale Borough Council to have the opportunity to determine the application. By re-submitting the application we will provide them with the opportunity to evaluate and determine. We continue to believe this is a good project and there is still a need for wind farms in the area to meet local energy targets. We have carefully considered the environmental issues surrounding our wind farm plans and hope that Allerdale Council will be willing to approve our plans when they are submitted.”

The 5 turbines on the site would have the capacity to generate electricity for 7,000 homes and help to deliver Cumbria’s renewable energy targets of 247MW by 2015.
