< Back to all project news 21 Jul 2010 - Westnewton Broadview to appeal Westnewton wind farm decision
Broadview Energy Limited is to appeal to the UK Government Planning Inspectorate to overturn Allerdale Borough Council's decision to refuse planning permission for the Westnewton wind farm, a three turbine project located on land between Aspatria and Westnewton, Cumbria.
Broadview submitted the current planning application in 2008 following the withdrawal of an earlier application for a larger scheme. The application contained a revised layout incorporating a reduction in the number of turbines (from five to three) in consideration of the comments passed by the Council and others on the initial proposal.
The planning application was supported by both an Environmental Statement and a Planning Statement. The Environmental Statement detailed the findings of the independent Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the site and surrounding area as well as other technical assessments, while the Planning Statement evidenced compliance with the planning policy and guidelines.
Broadview is confident that through the information contained in these documents, they have submitted a proposal which has been considerately designed, is appropriate for the location, and, complies fully with national, strategic and local planning policies and guidelines. As such, Broadview believes it has strong grounds for appeal and is confident of success.
Broadview Managing Director Jeffrey Corrigan said: “We were disappointed by the Council’s decision; the revised planning application took account of the Council’s concerns and fully complied with the appropriate planning policies and guidance. The site is a good location for a wind farm of this scale that will provide clean renewable electricity for the next 25 years and make an important contribution towards the national objective of decarbonising the power sector.”
If approved, the scheme would provide clean, renewable electricity to meet the average annual demands of up to 3,400 homes and displace up to 13,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions that would otherwise be produced by fossil fuelled power stations. In addition, Broadview would contribute over £300,000 during the proposed 25 year lifetime of the wind farm to a Community Fund to support local community groups and projects. For media enquiries, please contact:
