More than 45 people from the village of Westnewton and the surrounding area attended a public exhibition about Broadview Energy’s proposed wind farm. The exhibition took place at Westnewton Village Hall yesterday (Monday, December 8th) and gave local people the opportunity to learn more about the company’s revised plans for the wind farm on farmland south of the village. It also gave people the chance to ask questions of the Broadview Energy team before the company submits a planning application to Allerdale Council later this month.

Jeffrey Corrigan, Managing Director of Broadview Energy, said: “As we have reduced the number of turbines to three on the site, and finalised their location, we wanted to share the detail of our plans with local people before our planning application is submitted. We intend to submit the application to Allerdale Council within the next fortnight and then it will be open for public consultation for a period of up to 16 weeks. Whilst we accept there are objectors to our scheme, some of whom attended yesterday’s exhibition, it’s important for it to be viewed in the context of local and national planning policy and the need for this country to increase sources of renewable energy as part of a wider programme to reduce the harmful effects of climate change. It’s an ideal site for a small wind farm and we are committed to taking it through the planning process.”

Broadview Energy is proposing a wind farm of 3 turbines on the site. Each turbine can generate between 2-3MW, and so the farm will produce green, renewable energy for about 3,400 households and will help to meet Cumbria’s onshore wind energy targets of 210MW by 2010; the present figure is around 68MW.

    Notes to editors:

    • Additional information on the Westnewton wind farm project can be found at www.broadviewenergy.com or www.westnewtonwind.com. A leaflet about the wind farm and the exhibition was distributed to local residents and advertisements were placed in the local press.
    • Broadview Energy Limited (www.broadviewenergy.com) develops wind energy projects in Great Britain that will generate clean and sustainable energy. Broadview takes projects from site identification, through the planning process to construction and ultimately operation. The company focuses on small projects, typically between two and ten turbines. It currently has projects under various stages of development in Aberdeenshire, Leicestershire and North Yorkshire.
    • The Government has a target of 20% of all the electricity produced in this country should be from renewable sources by 2020; currently the figure sits at approximately 5%.
