A green energy developer has been given planning permission by Stockton Borough Council today for the development of a small wind farm between the villages of Seamer and Hilton. Broadview Energy has proposed to install five turbines, 125 metres in height, either side of electricity pylons, which run across farmland in between the villages of Seamer and Hilton. Three of the five turbines are in Stockton and the remaining two in the Hambleton District.

Jeffrey Corrigan, managing director of Broadview Energy, said: “We are very pleased at the committee’s decision. After the initial plans were rejected back in November we worked tirelessly to ensure we answered every question the committee raised so we could resubmit new and highly detailed applications.

“We have worked intensively over the past several months with organisations such as Natural England, local councils, Highways Agency and many others as we believe in this development, and, that it is well suited to the proposed landscape.”

There were more than 460 letters of support in comparison to around 400 letters of objection received by Stockton Borough Council.

The proposed wind farm will generate up to 15MW of electricity - the equivalent to the annual energy needs of more than 8,000 homes - and would make an important contribution to the Teesside renewable targets of 138MW by 2010.

Commenting on the council’s change in decision, Mr Corrigan said: “We were always hopeful the additional research and papers we submitted would clear up any misconceptions and queries anyone had about the development. Our extensive research has involved teams of experts from throughout the UK but the many man hours we have invested in this are worth it now we’ve received the positive vote from Stockton.

“The energy targets may be ambitious to some but they are realistic if we are to create sustainable energy sources within the UK and reduce our need for imported fuels. I think there has been a change in perception recently amongst people and organisations as they acknowledge there is a genuine need for renewable energy sources, such as wind farms.”

Broadview Energy now awaits the decision from Hambleton District Council in relation to the two proposed wind turbines within its jurisdiction. This is expected to be provided mid-July.
