Broadview Energy has been informed of the Government Office for the North East (GONE) instructions to Stockton-on-Tees Council not to issue a formal planning approval notice for the Seamer wind farm following last week’s Planning Committee decision (July 1st) whilst GONE considers a request from Dari Taylor MP for the Secretary of State for Energy & Climate Change to review the Council’s decision.

Jeffrey Corrigan, Managing Director of Broadview Energy, said: “While we are disappointed with this development, it is not uncommon for Government offices to look at planning applications to check that all the policies and decisions have been taken correctly, and we’re confident that will be the case here. It is disappointing that the local MP has raised concerns around a number of issues that were assessed in detail by Councillors and the Council’s planning officers, and considering that relevant statutory consultees have not objected to our proposed scheme.

“We are unclear why she is challenging a local democratic decision that is in line with national planning policy. Furthermore, it is in accordance with her Government’s stated policy on the overwhelming need for local renewable energy generation to combat climate change, diversify the energy generation mix and reduce our reliance on imported coal and gas.

“Stockton Council examined all of the relevant issues in detail in consultation with the appropriate authorities and took into account the representations received and the relevant planning regulations. We are confident that the application does not raise any national, strategic or regional planning issues that would justify the decision being reviewed by the Secretary of State.”

Broadview looks forward to the Government Office for the North East promptly upholding Stockton Council’s decision.
