Pupils from the Cultercullen Primary School today visited Broadview Energy's new Hill of Fiddes wind farm to attend the official “naming of the turbine” ceremony. Four of the Cultercullen pupils, who won the competition to name each of the three wind turbines, were asked to cut the ribbon on each turbine (see pictures).
Each of the wind turbines, named by the children as Angus, Zephyr and Turby, will generate enough power to meet the annual electricity needs of more than 1,000 households in the region. The Hill of Fiddes wind farm, the first to be developed in Scotland by Broadview Energy, entered commercial operation in April of this year.
Lisa Ross, Community Relations Manager for Broadview Energy, said: “We are delighted that so many children from Cultercullen Primary entered the competition to name our three turbines and were able to attend today’s ceremony. Our wind farm will be a local landmark for many years to come and so we see today’s event as an important milestone for both our company and the local community.
“We place great importance on having a good relationship with the school, the Foveran and Udny Community Councils as well as local residents. Our Hill of Fiddes Community Fund, administered by the two Community Councils, and the Cultercullen and Foveran schools, will support a range of community-based projects and so we hope that groups, especially in the areas of education and the environment, will come forward with suggestions for support.”
Broadview Energy will contribute approximately £11,000 per year to the Hill of Fiddes Community Fund for the operational life of the wind farm.
Christine Gilmour, Head of Cultercullen Primary School, said: “Over the past few months, our children have seen how the new wind farm has been built and it has helped them to understand the importance of energy to our lives, how wind energy is helping the environment today but most importantly in the future. Meeting and talking to some of the Broadview staff has also helped them develop ideas about the workplace and industry.”
